This national event was first held in 1929, but alas 1933 marked the end of this series and it wasn’t until 2005 that a group of enthusiasts planned a revival.
In 2007 the race for veteran motorbikes, including 3-wheelers, was held on Seeboden Alp just above Küssnacht. It was a resounding success. Another hill climb followed in 2009 and a third in September of 2011. The race is slowly achieving its old recognition as a national event and this year’s competition fulfilled its promise to host a record number of competitors.
Lots of TLC is required to keep these old three-wheelers going...
In the UK three wheelers were always taxed as motor bikes and thus were much cheaper to keep on the road - in addition, it wasn’t necessary to have a full driving license, only a motor-bike license. The infamous Reliant Robin may still be seen on some roads in Britain - production finally ceased in 2001. The Robin, unlike the three-wheeler with the JAP engine shown below, had its single wheel at the back which made it very unstable!
