Cuba - 80 years later

In 1973 I visited Cuba for the first time - without a camera and not having heard of Walker Evans an American photographer who visited the island in 1933. In 2012 (almost 80 years after W.E.) I went to Cuba again. I started to photograph with my memories and with W.E’s images in my head - what had changed in the meantime? Lots of things and nothing - happy children, poor adults and run-down buildings that had seen better days. What were the results of the revolution? National pride, healthy people, good education and chance-equality, but everything was in short supply and poverty was everywhere. Under Raúl Castro the population was trying to realise the combination of capitalism and socialism - but not too quickly please… the island is very special and if the pace of change is too quick then a lot could be lost. And now in 2026 a certain president is tightening the screws even further - life must be very difficult over there.
